A couple tips and tricks for booking flights and getting around Puerto Rico.

FLIGHTS

Airport: SJU

(Luis Muñoz Marin Airport)

Recommended Airlines:

A good rule of thumb is that flights tend to get cheaper over time up until approx. 60 days out from the event (For us that is around Jan 5th, 2025) and then proceed to get more expensive as the date approaches.

However if you see a flight for a price that’s okay with you, there’s no harm in locking in your trip.

We like Google Flights for tracking and comparing prices:

GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Puerto Rico is built much like the United States in terms of infrastructure, cars are king.
However, Old San Juan is the exception.

If you’ll be staying in San Juan with us, we recommend you take a taxi or an Uber to your accommodations.

If you’d like to rent a car, check with your hotel to make sure there is parking.

Places to avoid

Just like in any major city, you must be aware of your surroundings and smart when it comes to traveling.

La Perla is a neighborhood that became popular through the music video “Despacito”, but it is also one of the most dangerous neighborhoods (for tourists) on the island. They are very private and protective of their space and don’t appreciate outsiders coming in to take over or pictures.

They give tours of La Perla since it has one of the best views of the island, but you must be accompanied by a tour guide who has been given express permission to be there. If you do venture down, always ask permission before taking any pictures.

If you’re from Atlanta, think of it like Bankhead. If you’re from New York, think of it like Manhattan in the 80’s. Unless you are from the island, its probably for the best that you avoid this area. It’s not really possible to wander in as long as you’re paying attention. It’s next to El Morro, down by the coast and it’s separated from Old San Juan by a road
